Athlete of the Month- Jennifer Aponte

imageLet me first start by saying how honored it feels to have been chosen as the Crossfit Solafide Athlete of the Month. The Crossfit Community has been nothing short of Amazing and Welcoming. Now, here is a little about my back story….

Growing up I was fairly unhealthy. I was overweight as a child and that carried into my high school years. A surprise pregnancy after graduating helped me gain over 45 pounds to my already overweight and unhealthy frame. I dabbled in some home fitness workouts, but nothing too note worthy.

Fast forward several years and to my first time at SolaFide…..I remember my best friend Desiree telling me about Crossfit and how she thought I would enjoy it. It literally took a whole year before I even got the courage to go. I didn’t feel ‘fit’ enough to even try it out and I was afraid of being singled out. My first workout at the box was an Endurance Class…..of course it just so happened to also be a farewell WOD. It was tough. I wanted to quit, I wanted to cry, I was tired and I had to modify everything. I couldn’t even do a few ab mat sit-ups! Despite my inability to complete any of the movements as prescribed I was never laughed at and no one looked down upon me…..I experienced what I love so much about my Crossfit family….uplifting Support and Cheers from the Coaches and other Athletes.

imageI continued with CrossFit SolaFide’s Endurance Program for a few months and Coaches Lori and Cami have been there for me every step of the way. Even when I couldn’t Run 200m, even when I couldn’t Box Jump 12 inches, even when I started with a 8lb Wallball. They have encouraged and made me feel so great about myself. They were always pushing me further and I cannot thank them enough. With their support I signed up for OnRamp a few months later and now here I am almost a year into my Crossfit Journey.

I can now run a 5k without stopping, I actually placed 2nd in my age group in the my last race. I can jump that dreaded 20 inch box, I am able to use a 14 pound wallball, do sit-ups, HSPU, strict pull-ups, pistols and most of all, I have found confidence in myself again. I wouldn’t be who I am today without my Crossfit family. In addition to the new friendships I have made at SolaFide I have also learned how to properly fuel my body with quality Nutrition. This has been a new lifestyle change not only for myself, but for my family as well. My husband as well as daughters have decided to join in on the fun and do Crossfit classes!
