Athlete of the Month- Darren Cruz

image6I want to say that I am truly honored to be recognized as Athlete of the Month. I’ve never been the athlete of any month anywhere or even labeled as athletic for that matter, so I can honestly say that this feels good. I feel so lucky to be able to work out with so many amazing Athletes and Coaches. Thank you all! 

So before my head gets bigger than Andy Lyons’ calf muscles, (I love you bro!), I’d like to tell you a little about myself. I’ve lived here in Clarksville for the better half of my life. I went to high school here, graduated from Austin Peay, and it’s where my  wife, Tammy, and I have chosen to raise our family of five together.
I’ve always tried to keep myself in good shape but never really understood exactly how to do that. I joined gym after gym doing the same work out routines and never really noticed any results. I’ve always had a passion for running and would participate in several races each year ranging from 5k’s, 10k’s, to Half Marathons. I had no problem finishing the races, but my race times were not improving and at times were getting worse.

image7I caught wind of Crossfit and even saw a couple of friends who were members of SolaFide that had completely transformed themselves. That was when I told myself I needed to make a change. I signed up for my first CrossFit Endurance Class last February weighing my heaviest at 230lbs.
I’ll never forget my first two WODS. The first was with Coach Tori and it consisted of a gazillion body weight squats that caused me to be sore for two days straight. The second WOD was with Coach Nicole G. and she explained that we would be doing burpees. I was that guy in class that asked, “What is a Burpee?” Needless to say, I was quickly schooled on the movement. I was sore.  I felt beat down and broken. But for the first time in a long time I was challenged. I was determined to get better because after all, hard WODS equal hard BODS, right?! Coach Matt educated me on Nutrition and how to fuel my body the right way and I was hooked!




image10To date I’ve lost over 40lbs. I’ve also improved my fastest half marathon time by twenty four minutes but most importantly I feel stronger and I am healthier. I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish any of it without the encouragement from the many amazing Athletes and Coaches at CrossFit Solafide. Nicole and Cole have a created an atmosphere at Solafide that is healthy, beneficial, and fun and I’m happy to be part of it all.
