Growing up as a tomboy in a small town, I preferred football or kickball to tea parties and dolls. However, throughout high school I focused on academics and music. After graduating from Union University with a degree Elementary Education, I married my hero and workout partner, Chad. God richly blessed us with Madison and Brock to complete Team Rowland, and they are my heart. Together, we live by faith with a passion for serving people and a love of sport and fitness.

When my children were small, working out became my “alone” time when life got hectic. I loved how it gave me time to myself and relieved stress, but I spent years trying to find a workout routine that kept my interest or helped me gain the strength I desired. I was committed and had the discipline but it sure lacked in fun. A few years ago several friends kept recommending I try CrossFit. I could tell it was transforming them, but my insecurities kept me from trying it. “I’m not a runner”  “I won’t fit in”  “What if I can’t do it?”  “I don’t like classes!” “My workout is my personal time and I don’t think I can share that!” My now much older children became my inspiration. At each of their sporting events, I cheered for them to run faster, push past their fears, play with confidence, and yet I couldn’t remember the last time I had worked outside of my comfort zone. I wanted to lead by example.

With that in mind, I pushed my fears aside and started at CrossFit SolaFide in 2011. I was immediately hooked. SolaFide’s program and community have pushed me, encouraged me, and helped me achieve things I never thought I would be doing in this phase of my life. The combination of gymnastics, metabolic conditioning, and weightlifting increases performance in all physical domains and builds confidence. I also began to gain the strength I desired. However, I must admit, it was the community I had once feared that kept me coming back. The instruction, encouragement, and accountability pushed me past anything I had tried to achieve on my own. And it was FUN! My entire family now trains at CrossFit SolaFide. There is nothing better than discussing our WODs over our “clean but not quite Paleo meal.”

As I strive now to give back through coaching, my best advice is: Listen. Be teachable. Be patient. Celebrate your gains and those of other athletes. Do the work and you will amaze yourself.
