Athlete of the Month- CC Conterras
A little bit about myself, my life began in Houston, Texas where I lived most of my life. I had a rough life since I was the youngest of 4 brothers’ lol. I eventually moved to a small town north of Houston; Cleveland, Texas due to my parents separating. Throughout my life, I never had the chance to experience what being part of a sports team feels like until my middle school years where I played football. I enjoyed the camaraderie of having teammates so I began to learn about different sports like baseball, soccer, and basketball.  I played sports all the way through high school and sometimes I miss my high school years…who doesn’t!
2009 was an important year of my life. It started when I enlisted in the Army and it was topped off when I eventually came across a beautiful woman that would become the mother of my children. I married my wife Matilde in 2010 and 9 months later the good Lord surprised us with a beautiful boy named Romeo.  We are now on soon to be second child who will be a girl named Alessandra.
My first experience with Crossfit was when I was stationed in Landstuhl, Germany. A couple of friends invited me to join them in a “WOD.â€Â I looked at them like they were crazy because I didn’t know what “WOD†meant. My first WOD was “Cindy.â€Â After I glanced at what the WOD contained, I told myself that this exercise was going to be easy! OHHH BOYY was I mistaken!!! If I remember correctly, I didn’t make it past 5 rounds. That is when I realized that my fitness was not as good as I thought it was. The intensity got me hooked on Crossfit. After leaving Germany, I came here to Ft. Campbell when I began to search for a local Crossfit box to attend. After using the good ol’ Google search, I came across Crossfit SolaFide.  The only issue was that if I wanted to attend the classes, I would have to drive about 30 minutes one way after work.  I decided to join this group of amazing, outgoing people. When I joined, I set one main goal. My goal was to lose weight because my military career would have been in jeopardy. After several months of attending classes, I set PRs in all my lifts but I was still having issues with my weight.
January 2014, I knew that the only way I could lose weight is by cutting off all my favorite Mexican foods that kept me chunky. I decided to quit “cold turkey†on the food that I have always enjoyed all my life. I also went all in on the “Paleo†craziness. Long Story short, I went from weighting 213lbs to weighting around 165lbs in about 3 months.  I couldn’t have done it without my wife. She supported me in my goal and I finally accomplished it. Now that I have accomplished this goal, I have set several other goals to take its place like getting my first muscle up to running a 6:30ish minute mile.
I have enjoyed my time working out at SolaFide. I would like to thank Cole and Nicole for giving me the opportunity to join Crossfit SolaFide and all the Coaches in helping me fix my form on all the questionable movements. I didn’t want to single anyone out but I would like to especially thank Shanon Gayheart and Dean Geraths. Both of these two individuals have pushed me in every WOD and never allow me to quit.  I am very competitive and I don’t like losing so it keeps me on my toes to improve my overall fitness. I am a firm believer that with the Grace of God, anything is possible. So continue pushing towards your goal and never quit. Like Isaiah 40:31 says, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.â€
