I grew up in Nazareth, PA. I played field hockey for 5 years and loved it and loved being active. One day during practice I fell and hurt my hip.
Turns out I was born with Hip Displaysia. After a hip reconstructive surgery and a titanium pin inserted in my hip, I was back on the road to playing sports again and more determined than ever to not let anything stop me from being active.
In 1995, I attended Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, and earned a BFA in graphic design. After working as a graphic designer for a few years, I stumbled upon the opportunity to teach ballroom dancing. Loved it!!! I met my husband while teaching there. He was home from the Marines waiting to attend flight school for the Army at Ft. Rucker, AL. A year later I moved to AL and we started our journey together. After flight school, we lived in South Korea for 2 years where we got married and had our daughter, Ethney. I had the incredible experience of working in a Korean school teaching English to children.
From there we moved to Ft. Hood, TX, in 2006. 3 months after moving there, my husband was deployed for 15 months. It was during that time I really got into fitness. In 2007, I got my first certification through Les Mills and started teaching a fitness class called BodyJam. Then it quickly evolved to another class and another class. By the end of 2007, I had 4 group fitness certifications. My fitness journey had begun and I was loving it. In January of 2010, my husband came home for R&R during his second deployment and showed me this thing called, “CrossFit”. “Barbara” was my first WOD. I was sore for 5 days and hooked! In July of 2010, I got my CrossFit Level 1 certification. In August of 2010, we moved back to Ft. Rucker, AL and there was no CrossFit. In November 2010, we opened our own box, Optio CrossFit. Three years later in August of 2013, we moved here to Clarksville to stay.
My love for CrossFit grows everyday. I love seeing people thrive in fitness and the community that comes along with CrossFit. I enjoy competing on teams in CrossFit competitions and hope to inspire both my children to have a lifelong love for fitness and to help them lead a healthy lifestyle.
